Oh wow! Just wow! So this is very different…
I feel like I am in Need for Speed II or the OG Gran Turismo; The driving is actually functional in the game now, and by functional I mean the mechanic of driving is a real gameplay element now, that you can engage with in a way that it feels like you are in control – rather than pushing the accelerator, hitting the handbrake now-and-again, and *hoping*
The handling is no longer on rails, and I feel like I can keep the car alive and drive long distances at high speed without a single scratch. I can steer to avoid rather than the massive oversteer that was part of the previous version of this game… and the cars?
Rayfield Caliburn: This hypercar comes with the crystaldome windshield for “extra privacy”, but that’s not why you are gonna want it – previously this car was practically un-driveable, but it’s instantly become my favourite car on this redux playthrough. I stole this puppy off the street from some poor ‘choom waiting at a traffic light. Using a Body 9 check I forced my way through the security and tossed the hapless driver to the bitumen then took off on a joyride throughout Night City.
Quadra Type-66 640 TS: This is the stock model Quadra, so you might expect it to perform poorly, but actually it handles like a dream and has some serious speed to boot. This sports coupe is Kitsch-styling, which means it is a mid-tier workhorse, and that’s exactly how it feels. So whilst it is a quality vehicle it still has me yearning for the electric orange Jen Rowley!
Quadra Turbo R-740: Whilst this car is flashier looking than the 66-type and seems faster, it doesn’t handle that great and feels light and flimsy whilst driving. Whereas the 640 TS model is a muscle car, that feels grounded and stuck to the road, this streamlined super car feels like it could fly off the road at any moment. I really appreciate the differences in the cars here though; That *should* be the experience. You don’t want a vanilla, every car is the same except for speed, as the gameplay mechanic – I think CDPR have definitely fine-tuned this area of the game to make sure the cars each have a more unique feel, handling, and speed when you drive them.
My standard driving simulator test-runs are essentially if I see a car that “looks fast”, I try and Grand Theft Auto it, and then if the cops are notified, I am using that NFS style mindset to clear the wanted stars, before exploring the city and finding straights to go fast, areas to take nice background photos, and of course the quintessential burnout shot.
The driving has improved to simulator levels during this redux playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Xbox Series X. What’s your favourite car in Cyberpunk 2077; let us know in the comments below!
